Building commenced of this giant building in 1297 with the original intention of it being the Republican Government Headquarters. Today Palazzo Pubblico is an art haven with colourful frescoes filling almost every room. An artist called Ambrogio Lorenzetti painted the most famous secular fresco here, a series titled ‘The Allegory of Good and Bad Government’. Justice is personified as a woman with other intriguing symbols depicting the social strife for a fair governance system in Siena at the time.
Another famous painting on display here is one titled ‘Maestà’ by Simone Martini. It’s a famous example of gothic art which depicts warmer and softer tones of the Virgin Mary than that of a former Byzantine style.

There are several interesting museums with Palazzo Pubblico worth seeing such as the Civic museum. It’s open all year around except Christmas public holidays and entry is only €8.
