Lagoon of Monte Argentario
Spend a glorious few days of your Tuscany holiday in the sunny gem of Monte Argentario.

Situated in the sea between Giglio Island and the mainland Tuscan province of Grosseto, Monte Argentario was once an independent island.

Over 4000 years ago, two narrow strips of land called Isthmuses formed with water on either side that merged on the north eastern and eastern side of Monte Argentario Island.

Choose from an incredible range of luxury villas in Grosseto province, including fabulous vacation rentals on the Tuscan coast where you can enjoy the sunshine and scenery after your days of tourist exploration.
Argentario's Porto Santo Stefano
These strips of land are specifically a type of Isthmus called a tombolo. These form when tides and waves push a wall of sand and sediment up from both sides that eventually form solid land and connect mostly nearby islands with the mainland.

One of these tombolos is called Tombolo di Feniglia and is a stunning nature reserve. It can only be explored by tourists on foot as it’s the home of many roe deer that eat the nutritious grass that grows on it.

The two tombolos have created a beautiful lagoon in between Monte Argentario and the coast of Grosseto province. Jutting out into the middle of the lagoon is the picturesque ‘floating’ town of Orbetello.
Porto Ercole on Argentario
This quaint commune was founded on the thin strip of mainland that once jutted directly out to sea. When the two tombolos merged with Monte Argentario Island, the seawater became much calmer and even more pleasant to explore.

A bridge connects Orbetello with Monte Argentario and is framed on the north side by Tombolo della Giannella and on the south side by Tombolo della Feniglia. The lagoons here are perfect breeding grounds for eels which is why it features heavily on the fresh seafood menus of Orbetello’s eateries. Taste these salty delicacies for yourself on your vacation to Monte Argentario and experience a superb time here.
