If your holiday in Southern Tuscany brings you anywhere close to the ‘floating’ town of Orbetello in Grosseto province then be sure to take an hour or two to visit Albinia.
This quaint little hamlet is a frazione of Orbetello and can easily be explored from the ancient Roman road called Via Aurelia nearby.
It’s perfectly situated as a stop off for tourists along their scenic exploration of the Maremma as Albinia lies only 10 kilometres from Orbetello and 33 kilometres from Grosseto.

It also has a station positioned along the Pisa-Grosseto-Rome national railway line.
There are two main attractions in Albinia worth seeing, apart from the views of course! One is the church of Santa Maria delle Grazie which is a daintily decorated parish church here.
The other pretty attraction of Albinia is the Torre delle Saline which is the salt fortress which was built here in the 14th century and fortified by the Spaniards in 1630.

It was a strategically placed building which controlled the nearby salt marshes and was a lookout spot for traffic moving along the Via Aurelia. Read our accompanying articles which describe this picturesque part of Tuscany known as the Maremma.
