We've been talking all about Chianti this week and, in particular, we have focused on one rather extraordinary attraction: the Chianti Cashmere Goat Farm. As mentioned in the last couple of articles, this is a small farm in the Chianti region of Tuscany that was established in 1972 by Nora Kravis. Today, it is a model for sustainable farming and small business, as well as a wonderful place to spend a day learning about sustainable farming, petting the goats, shopping incredible quality garments and enjoying rural Tuscan living. Up until now, we haven't really mentioned what is arguably the best and most important part of the Chianti Cashmere Goat Farm: the goats!
Up until now, we haven't really mentioned what is arguably the best and most important part of the Chianti Cashmere Goat Farm: the goats!
Not just any goats, these are cashmere goats, a particularly hardy and adaptable breed who fit well with sustainable livestock schemes and really make the most of their surroundings. They require little intervention and even eat the unpalatable weeds that other animals scorn.
This preference for weeds, brambles, and thorny or prickly plants make them the natural weeding machines and can be used to great advantage to improve abandoned land. In fact, these guys have really helped transform a farm that was once abandoned and left to grow wild.
In addition to goats everywhere, you'll find a team of guard dogs (11 adults and some puppies) of the Abruzzo shepherd breed who protect the goats from attacks by animals such as wolves. So, when you arrive, you'll have plenty of puppies to pet, as well as goats to admire.
