While serious runners will take the opportunity to get a run in whenever and wherever they can, there is no denying that a scenic setting majorly adds to the experience. A run while on holidays, therefore, offers the chance to get your run in while also getting out and taking in your surroundings.
Imagine, for example, that you find a perfect option among our Tuscany Villas and are staying in a dreamy vacation rental in Chianti, your run of the day could be down winding old roads amidst the vineyards of this beloved wine area. With the leaves on the vines rustling in the breeze or sunlight dancing across your path between branches, with backdrops of pretty old towns and rolling green hills, and with fresher than fresh air and the relaxing sounds of nature, we could think of few places more magical and atmospheric for a run! If, however, you are feeling like you also want a challenge or to indulge in a bit of competitive spirit, then maybe you should sign up for the Chianti Classico Marathon!
Taking place on Sunday the 11th of May 2025, this event not only offers different running levels and experiences in this magical setting but it pairs it perfectly with some Tuscan wines and delicacies at the final lunch served to competitors at the end of the event. So, if you want to try for a great time or you just want to get out and active for the day but at your own pace, then this is a wonderful way to experience the region while staying in a holiday rental in Chianti and to enjoy the communal spirit of the day!
The race starts from Mercatale Val di Pesa and then crosses the municipalities of San Casciano Val di Pesa, Barberino Tavarnelle, and Greve in Chianti. Sights that will be encountered along the way include, “the new Antinori Cellars, the ancient Abbey of Badia a Passignano, the wonderful historic center of Greve in Chianti, the medieval village of Montefioralle, perched on the hill, the Castle of Verrazzano and the Castle of Gabbiano.” There are three different race and course options for participants to choose between: the Ultratrail 53 km, a course that has been lengthened from 47.8 to 53 km and has challenges to test even the most experienced athletes; the Trail 21.8 km, a medium-length course that allows a decent challenge and the opportunity to really enjoy trail running in Chianti; and the Free Pace and Nordic Walking 10 km, which is the relaxed option for those less interested in competition and more interested in the experience.
At the end of the Ultratrail 53km course, the final lunch will be prepared to be served to competitors, with local dishes and wines available to be sampled. Those who aren’t running and those competing alike, however, can both enjoy the dishes and delights of Chianti as there will be an itinerary of tastings and tours available at participating wineries and cellars in the area. Special discounts and offers will be available to competitors and their travel companions and to the public at large at wineries for the duration of the event. In addition to the tours in the wineries, there will also be some other tours of local towns and attractions, with the food and wine culture of Chianti always as a central theme.
Registration is currently available for individuals and groups or clubs, with discounts for those registering as groups. The Ultratrail costs €50 per person when booking as an individual, the Trail costs €30, and the Free Pace costs €10.
